Pet shipping to Australia made simple

Moving pets to Australia requires careful planning, but the process is straightforward when you understand what's needed. Australia is a rabies free country with strict import regulations designed to protect their unique ecosystem.

Every dog and cat entering Australia must complete several key steps. First, your pet needs a rabies vaccination and subsequent blood test (RNATT) to verify antibody levels. The date this blood sample reaches an approved lab starts a mandatory 180-day waiting period before travel. During this time, we'll secure your import permit from Australia's Department of Agriculture and arrange quarantine space at the government facility in Melbourne.

With planning starting 9-12 months before departure, we'll guide you through every stage and ensure your pet arrives safely.

Pet flights to Australia: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
Begin preparations 9-12 months before your intended travel date. The mandatory 180-day waiting period after your pet's rabies antibody test means early planning is essential.
How much does it cost to move a pet to Australia?
Prices start from around £3,000 including quarantine fees. Costs vary based on your pet's size, the crate required, and additional services like door-to-door transport. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to Australia?
We primarily use Emirates and Qatar Airways, both offering excellent pet care facilities at their Dubai and Doha hubs. Flights depart from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. All pets travel in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold that's just like the passenger cabin. Our IATA-compliant crates include absorbent bedding and secure food and water containers.
Can I visit my pet during quarantine in Australia?
Unfortunately, visits aren't permitted at the Mickleham quarantine facility. However, the facility provides excellent care, and staff are experienced in managing pets from approved countries worldwide.
What is an RNATT and why is it required?
A Rabies Neutralising Antibody Test (RNATT) is a blood test that confirms your pet's rabies vaccine has produced sufficient antibodies. The date this blood sample reaches the approved lab starts the mandatory 180-day countdown to travel.
What are the quarantine requirements?
All pets entering Australia must complete either 10 or 30 days in quarantine at the government facility in Melbourne. Pets with completed identity verification by OV66 authorised vets qualify for the reduced 10-day stay.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to Australia?
Yes. With proper preparation and careful timing, we can transport brachycephalic breeds safely. Emirates allows snub-nosed transit at certain times of year, or we can arrange flights via Sri Lankan Airlines through Colombo year-round.

Stress-free quarantine arrangement

We book your dog's space at the Mickleham facility and provide clear information about what to expect during their 10 or 30-day stay. The facility is designed for dogs and cats arriving from approved countries, with daily care from experienced staff.
Dog shipping to Australia: essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations or blood tests. This unique pet's microchip number links all documentation and ensures your dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination and RNATT

Your dog must receive a rabies vaccine at least 21 days before their blood sample is taken for the RNATT. Only approved labs can process this test. The date the sample arrives starts the mandatory 180-day waiting period before your dog can travel to Australia.

Identity verification (OV66 checks)

To reduce quarantine from 30 days to 10 days, two separate OV66 authorised vets must complete identity verification checks before the RNATT. These vets must work at different locations. We can refer you to OV66 vets nationwide if your regular vet doesn't hold this authorisation.

Additional blood tests for dogs

Within 45 days of departure, male dogs and unvaccinated females may require blood tests for:

  • Brucella Canis
  • Leishmaniosis
  • Leptospirosis

We'll advise which tests your dog needs based on their sex and vaccination history, and coordinate with your vet to complete them on schedule.

Parasite treatments

Before travel, your dog must receive treatments for internal parasites and external parasites as specified in Australia's import conditions. These treatments must be administered within specific timeframes and recorded in your export health certificate.

Vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, we strongly recommend protecting your dog against:

  • Leptospirosis
  • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Para influenza)
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)

These vaccinations are required if your dog boards with us before departure.

Import permit application

After your dog's RNATT results are confirmed, we complete the RNATT Declaration and apply for your import permit. Approval typically takes 4 weeks. This permit specifies your dog's quarantine length and entry requirements.

Export health certificate

Within 5 days of departure, an Official Veterinarian completes your dog's export health certificate, confirming all entry requirements are met. Our airport vets can handle this at check-in for your convenience.

Quarantine at Mickleham

All dogs entering Australia spend 10 or 30 days at the government quarantine facility near Melbourne Airport. The facility provides secure housing, daily care, and veterinary oversight. After completion, we arrange onward transport to your final destination.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated cargo hold. We select airlines with excellent animal handling, like Emirates and Qatar Airways. Both offer climate-controlled reception centres at their transit hubs where dogs are fed, watered, and exercised during layovers.

Banned dog breeds

Australia prohibits the import of:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Perro de Presa Canario

Unfortunately, we cannot transport these breeds to Australia due to government restrictions.

No, visits aren't permitted at the Mickleham facility. However, the staff provide excellent care and your dog will be comfortable throughout their stay.

Feline-specific knowledge

Cats have different stress responses to travel than dogs. We provide advice on crate training, understand airline restrictions on feline passengers, and ensure your cat's journey is as calm as possible.

Simplified blood test requirements

Cats only require the RNATT blood test, unlike dogs who may need additional tests for Brucella Canis and Leptospirosis. We coordinate with your vet to complete this single test correctly.

Safe transport for all breeds

Whether you have a domestic cat crossed with other breeds, a Bengal cat with Asian leopard cat ancestry, or any recognised cat breed, we ensure compliance with Australia's import regulations for cats and dogs.
Cat shipping to Australia: essential information
Microchip requirements

Like dogs, all cats must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip before any vaccinations or blood tests. This ensures your cat is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination and RNATT

Your cat must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before their blood sample is taken. The RNATT confirms adequate antibody levels. When this blood sample reaches an approved lab, your cat's mandatory 180-day waiting period begins.

Identity verification for cats

To reduce quarantine from 30 days to 10 days, two OV66 authorised vets must complete identity verification before the RNATT. These checks must be performed by vets at different locations. We can connect you with OV66 vets throughout Great Britain if needed.

Blood tests

Good news for cat owners: cats don't require the additional blood tests needed for dogs. The RNATT is the only blood sample required, simplifying the export process.

Parasite treatments

Before travel, your cat must receive treatments for internal parasites and external parasites within the timeframes specified by Australia's import conditions. These are recorded on the export health certificate.

Vaccinations

The rabies vaccine is mandatory. We also strongly recommend protecting your cat against:

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

This vaccination is required if your cat boards with us before departure.

Import permit and export paperwork

After the RNATT results are verified, we complete the declaration and apply for your cat's import permit. Once approved (approximately 4 weeks), we book quarantine space and prepare all export documentation.

Export health certificate

Within 5 days of departure, an Official Veterinarian certifies your cat meets all entry requirements. This veterinary health certificate must accompany your cat on their journey.

Quarantine arrangements

All cats must complete 10 or 30 days at the Mickleham quarantine facility. Cats with completed OV66 identity verification qualify for the reduced 10-day stay. The facility is experienced in caring for cats from approved countries.

Flight arrangements

Cats travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We ensure your cat's crate is appropriately sized, fitted with absorbent bedding, and includes secure water containers. At transit stops in Dubai or Doha, your cat will be cared for at the airline's reception facility.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted, but certain hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry may face restrictions. Bengal cats (domestic cat crossed with Asian leopard cat) are generally acceptable. If your cat has Safari cat (domestic cat crossed with Geoffroy cat), Serval cat (Felis serval), or Jungle cat ancestry, contact us to verify eligibility.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
