Pet shipping to Cyprus made simple

Cyprus is an EU member state, which means it follows standard EU pet travel regulations. For pet owners travelling from Great Britain, this means your old UK pet passport is no longer valid. Instead, you'll need an EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before travel.

The good news? Compared to many destinations, the pet import requirements for Cyprus are straightforward. There is no mandatory quarantine if your documentation is correct, and the UK is recognised as a Part 1 listed country under EU rules, so no rabies antibody blood test is required.

The key requirements for pets entering Cyprus are clear: your pet must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days prior to your travel date, and be at least 105 days old. If your pet already has a current, valid rabies vaccination, the whole process can be completed in a matter of weeks. We'll guide you through every step, from booking the Official Veterinarian appointment to notifying Cyprus authorities of your pet's arrival.

Pet flights to Cyprus: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
For most pets travelling from the UK, preparations can begin 4 to 8 weeks before your travel date. If your pet already has a valid rabies vaccination, the process moves quickly. If a new primary vaccination is needed, you must wait at least 21 days before travel. The Animal Health Certificate can only be issued within 10 days of departure, so booking your Official Veterinarian appointment close to your travel date is essential.
How much does it cost to move a pet to Cyprus?
Costs vary based on your pet's size, breed, the airline chosen, and any additional services such as door-to-door transport. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to Cyprus?
We work with airlines operating between the UK and Cyprus's two main airports: Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO). We select the best option for your pet based on their size, breed, and travel dates.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. Pets travelling as manifested cargo fly in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold, under the same conditions as the passenger cabin. Our IATA-compliant crates include absorbent bedding and secure water containers.
Is there quarantine in Cyprus?
No. Provided all entry requirements are met - a valid microchip, current rabies vaccination, and correctly completed Animal Health Certificate - your pet will clear the border inspection on arrival and come straight home with you.
What is an Animal Health Certificate and do I need one?
An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is the document required for pets travelling from Great Britain to any European Union country, including Cyprus. It replaced the EU pet passport for UK residents following Brexit. The AHC must be completed by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before your pet travels. We coordinate this appointment as part of our service.
What is the EU 5-day rule?
If your pet is not travelling on the same flight as you, they must travel within 5 days of your own journey. A written declaration from you as the owner must accompany the pet alongside the AHC. If this window cannot be met, the move falls under commercial pet transport regulations and different documentation is required. We'll advise on the right approach for your situation.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to Cyprus?
Brachycephalic breeds can travel to Cyprus, but some airlines restrict them as hold cargo, particularly in warmer months. We select the most suitable airline and travel timing to keep your pet safe throughout the journey.
Can I move a puppy to Cyprus?
Puppies must be at least 105 days old to enter Cyprus. This is because they must be at least 12 weeks old before receiving their rabies vaccination, then wait a further 21 days before travel. We'll advise on the right timing for your puppy's journey.
What about Northern Cyprus?
Northern Cyprus operates under different regulations and is not part of the EU. If you are relocating to Northern Cyprus, a separate import permit and rabies antibody titration test (a blood test that confirms your pet's rabies vaccine has produced sufficient antibodies) are required, and entry is typically arranged via Turkey. Contact us and we'll advise on current regulations for your specific destination.

Arrival coordination in Cyprus

We notify Cyprus's veterinary authorities at least 48 hours before your dog's arrival and coordinate ground handling at Larnaca or Paphos. Arrival inspections are routine when documents are in order, and we make sure they are.

Microchip requirements

Your dog must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit electronic microchip implanted before any vaccinations are given. Your pet's microchip number links every document in the import process and allows authorities to verify your dog's identity on arrival. Most dogs in the UK are already microchipped to an acceptable standard.

Rabies vaccination

All dogs entering Cyprus must be vaccinated against rabies after the microchip has been implanted. A primary (first) vaccination requires a 21-day wait before your dog can travel. Booster vaccinations given before the previous vaccine expires are valid straight away. Your dog must be at least 12 weeks old to receive the vaccine.

EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

Travelling from Great Britain, your dog requires an EU Animal Health Certificate rather than a pet passport. All veterinary checks and vaccinations must be completed prior to export and recorded correctly on the certificate. The AHC must be issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before departure. We coordinate this appointment and provide your vet with a full checklist to ensure it is completed correctly.

Recommended vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, we strongly recommend protecting your dog against:

  • Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)

These vaccinations may be required if your dog boards with us before departure.

The EU 5-day rule

If your dog is not travelling on the same flight as you, they must travel within 5 days of your own journey. A written owner declaration must accompany their AHC. If this window cannot be met, the move is classified under commercial transport regulations. We'll advise on the right approach for your situation.

Notifying Cyprus authorities

The person responsible for your dog must notify the District Veterinary Office at the point of entry at least 48 hours before arrival, providing the flight number, date, and arrival time. We handle this notification as part of our service.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifested cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We select airlines with strong animal welfare standards and choose the best routing for your dog based on breed, size, and time of year. Entry to the Republic of Cyprus is through Larnaca International Airport (LCA) or Paphos International Airport (PFO).

Banned breeds

Cyprus prohibits the import of the following breeds and their crosses:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa (Tosa Inu)
  • Dogo Argentino (Argentinian Mastiff)
  • Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian Mastiff)

Crossbreeds where the traits of a prohibited breed are predominant are also banned. Unfortunately, we cannot transport these breeds to Cyprus due to government restrictions.

Dog flights to the Cyprus: safe, direct, and carefully planned

Every dog's flight is arranged with their safety and comfort as the priority. We select airlines with proven animal handling records and plan routes that minimise travel time and stress.

For dogs flying from the UK to Cyprus, British Airways and TUI offer direct services from London Heathrow and Gatwick to both Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO).

If a direct route isn't suitable for your dog's breed or schedule, we arrange flights via Europe, with a longer travel duration, via major continental carriers, such as KLM, Lufthansa, and TAP.

At every transit point, your dog is offloaded, checked, and cared for at the airline's dedicated animal reception centre. We book cargo space, confirm crate specifications with the airline, and ensure your dog's paperwork matches the flight schedule precisely.

Whether you're making a permanent move or joining family on the island, dog relocation to Cyprus follows a clear, well-established process.

Dog flights to Cyprus: your questions answered
How long do dogs have to quarantine in Cyprus?

There is no mandatory quarantine for dogs entering Cyprus from the UK. Provided the microchip, rabies vaccination, and AHC are all correctly in order, your dog will be inspected on arrival and cleared through straight away.

How long does it take to prepare my dog's travel to Cyprus?

If your dog already has a valid rabies vaccination, the process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, centred around arranging the Official Veterinarian appointment within the 10-day AHC window. If a new primary vaccination is needed, allow an additional 21 days.

Can I take my snub-nosed dog to Cyprus?

Yes. Brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs and Pugs can travel to Cyprus with the right planning. We identify the safest airline and travel timing to minimise any risk during the journey.

Do dogs need tapeworm treatment to enter Cyprus?

No. Unlike destinations such as Ireland and Malta, Cyprus does not require tapeworm treatment before arrival. If you plan to return your dog to Great Britain afterwards, tapeworm treatment will be required 1 to 5 days before re-entry to the UK.

What documentation does my dog need?

Your dog needs a valid EU Animal Health Certificate completed by an Official Veterinarian, proof of ISO microchip, a current rabies vaccination record, and a written owner declaration if not travelling on the same flight as you.

What size crate does my dog need?

Your dog must be able to stand upright without touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We source or build IATA-compliant crates based on your dog's measurements to ensure comfort throughout the journey.

How much does it cost to fly a dog to Cyprus?

Costs depend on your dog's size, the crate required, departure airport, and any additional services. Request a quote for an accurate breakdown.

EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

UK pet passports are no longer valid for entry into Cyprus or any other EU country. Cats travelling from Great Britain require an EU Animal Health Certificate, completed by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before departure. We arrange this appointment and support your vet in completing the certificate correctly. The certificate enables Cyprus authorities to confirm your pet's health status and verify that all import regulations have been met.

Notifying Cyprus authorities

The owner or responsible person must notify the District Veterinary Office at the point of entry at least 48 hours before arrival, providing the flight number, date, and arrival time. We handle this notification on your behalf.

Flight arrangements

Cats travel as manifested cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We ensure your cat's crate is correctly sized, lined with absorbent bedding, and fitted with secure water containers. We select airlines with appropriate animal handling standards for the route to Larnaca or Paphos.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted entry to Cyprus. However, certain hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry are restricted. Wolf hybrids, Savannah cats, and Bengal cats cannot be imported unless they are at least five generations removed from their wild ancestor. If you own a Savannah, Caracal, or Jungle cat, contact us before planning travel so we can advise on eligibility.

The EU 5-day rule

If your cat is not travelling on the same flight as you, they must travel within 5 days of your own journey. A written owner declaration must accompany their AHC. We manage this as part of your cat's travel arrangement.

Recommended vaccinations

The rabies vaccine is mandatory. We also strongly recommend:

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

This vaccination is required if your cat boards with us before departure.

There is no mandatory quarantine for cats entering Cyprus from the UK. Provided the microchip, rabies vaccination, and AHC are all correctly completed, your cat will be inspected on arrival and cleared through straight away.

How much does it cost to fly a cat to Cyprus?

Costs depend on your cat's size, the crate required, and any additional services. Complete our quote form for a personalised estimate.

What vaccinations does my cat need?

Your cat must have a current rabies vaccination. We also strongly recommend FVRCP vaccination, particularly if your cat boards with us before departure.

Do cats need a blood test to enter Cyprus from the UK?

No. Because the UK is classified as a Part 1 listed country under EU rules, cats travelling directly from Great Britain do not require a rabies antibody blood test. The AHC and valid vaccination record are sufficient.

What size crate does my cat need?

Your cat must be able to stand without their head touching the top, turn around comfortably, and lie down fully stretched. We provide IATA-compliant crates built to your cat's measurements.

Can my cat fly on the same flight as me?

We can request cargo space on your flight if you provide your airline and travel date. Availability depends on the airline's cargo schedule, the time of year, and your cat meeting all documentation requirements by your departure date.

Are snub-nosed cats allowed to travel to Cyprus?

Yes. Flat-faced breeds such as Persians and Exotic Shorthairs can travel to Cyprus. Some airlines impose restrictions on them as hold cargo, particularly in warmer months. We advise on the most suitable routing and timing to ensure a safe, comfortable journey.

What happens if my cat is pregnant?

Cyprus permits the import of pregnant cats, provided all other entry requirements are met. Females with suckling young cannot travel until the kittens are weaned.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
