Pet shipping to Thailand made simple

Moving pets to Thailand requires careful planning, but the process is straightforward when you have the right guidance.

Thailand welcomes cats and dogs from the UK, and with correct documentation, your pet won't need to quarantine on arrival.

Every dog and cat entering Thailand must meet several key requirements.Your pet needs an ISO-compliant microchip, a current rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before departure, and all core vaccinations up to date. We’ll confirm your pet is fully vaccinated to meet Thailand’s entry rules before we finalise their import permit and flight itinerary.

Within 7 days of departure, your pet must receive treatments for internal and external parasites before finally completing the DEFRA export health certificate by an Official Veterinarian, which we can do at the airport as part of our service.

Whether you're moving with one pet, two pets, or more we'll guide you through every stage and ensure a smooth journey from the UK to your new home.

Pet flights to Thailand: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
Begin preparations 3 to 4 months before your intended travel date. Vaccinations must be given at least 21 days before departure, and import permits need to be applied for at least 15 working days in advance. Starting early gives you time to complete everything without rushing.
How much does it cost to move a pet to Thailand?
Costs typically range from around £1,400 for cats and small dogs, £2000 for medium dogs and up to £4,500 for larger dogs. The final price depends on your pet's size, the crate required, departure airport, and additional services like door-to-door transport. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Can I fly on the same flight as my pet?
In many cases, yes. We can arrange for your pet to travel as cargo on the same flight you're booked on, so you arrive in Thailand together. This depends on airline availability and your pet meeting all import requirements on your chosen date.
Which airlines fly pets to Thailand?
We primarily use British Airways or Thai Airways, who offer direct cargo services from the UK to Bangkok with trained animal attendants at every stage. Depending on your requirements, we can also arrange flights via Emirates, Qatar Airways, or KLM through their respective hub airports, which have a longer travel time, but can offer a more economical option.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes! Pets travel as air cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold with conditions similar to the passenger cabin, which are monitored remotely by the pilot during flight.  Your pet's IATA-compliant travel crate includes absorbent bedding and secure water containers. At transit stops, airline staff care for your pet at dedicated animal reception facilities.
Does my pet need to quarantine in Thailand?
No. Thailand does not require quarantine for pets arriving with correct documentation. On arrival, your pet is inspected at the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) at the airport. Provided all paperwork is in order and your pet is healthy, they are released the same day after a short inspection.
What is the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS)?
The AQS is based at your arrival airport in Thailand. Veterinary officers check your pet's import permit, vaccination records, health certificate, and microchip. Once everything is verified, they issue an import license (Form R-7) and your pet is cleared to enter the country. There is a small fee of 500 Thai Baht per animal, which is included as part of our destination services.
What documentation does my pet need?
The required documents (and other necessary documents) for bringing pets to Thailand must be presented at the airport AQS. We’ll prepare the following documents on your behalf: an import permit from Thailand's Department of Livestock Development, a DEFRA export health certificate (EHC 2917) completed by an Official Veterinarian, original vaccination records linked to their microchip number, and proof of parasite treatments.

TESTIMONIALS

Benjy to Bangkok

We were really impressed with the overall service we had from Pets By Plane and Freddie when we recently took our Labrador back home to Thailand. They were the only agent to include all services, including a price for their trusted partner in Bangkok, meaning we had a full door to door service.

The whole process went smoothly, and we were kept informed throughout and even provided a tracking link so we could see where his plane was! Highly recommend the whole team. Thanks!

TESTIMONIALS

3 cats from the UK to Thailand

Pets By Plane have been excellent. Their customer service, Freddie specifically, was brilliant. If I had any queries they answered them straight away and with great care and consideration.

I did research other companies to make sure my cats were transported well, and I chose well. Our cats boarded for one night before their flight and Aidan, who came and picked them up, took them to the vet and then boarded them was really helpful. He made sure our cats were comfortable for their journey.

We were then able to contact the import side and ensure a safe hand over.I thoroughly recommend Pets By Plane. They made adjustments for our cats and were clear throughout. Our three cats got to their destination healthy and happy.

TESTIMONIALS

Great professional service

Fantastic service - Freddie was amazing and kept clear communication throughout. Despite slight delay with the cat due to weather, the whole service went seamlessly. I’d definitely use the service again.

Dog shipping to Thailand:
essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations or blood tests. This microchip number must appear on all official documents, including vaccination records, the import permit, and the export health certificate.

Rabies vaccination

Your dog must receive a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before departure. The vaccine must be administered after the microchip is implanted, and must remain valid at the time of travel. Puppies cannot be vaccinated before 3 months of age and must be at least 4 months old to enter Thailand.

Core vaccinations

Thailand requires dogs to be vaccinated against canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and leptospirosis, in addition to rabies. All vaccinations must be given at least 21 days before departure and recorded against your dog's microchip number.

Leptospirosis testing

If your dog does not have a current leptospirosis vaccination, a negative blood test for leptospirosis can be used as an alternative and must be drawn within 30 days prior to departure. We'll advise whether your dog needs this test based on their vaccination history and coordinate with your vet to complete it on time.

Parasite treatments

No parasite treatments are required for dogs travelling to Thailand, however we always recommend keeping External (Ticks and Fleas) and Internal (Tapeworms) Treatments up to date at all times.

Import permit application

We apply for your dog's import permit from Thailand's Department of Livestock Development (DLD) at least 15 working days before travel. The application is submitted to the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) at your arrival airport. The permit is valid for 60 days.

Export health certificate

Within 3 days of departure, an Official Veterinarian appointed by DEFRA completes your dog's export health certificate (EHC 2917). This certifies your dog is free from signs of infectious disease and fit to travel. The import permit number must be recorded on this certificate. We arrange this appointment and ensure every detail is correct.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We primarily use Thai Airways for direct UK-to-Bangkok services, with trained animal attendants caring for your dog before and after the flight. We can also arrange routes via Emirates, Qatar Airways, or KLM depending on your needs.

Arrival and clearance at the AQS

On arrival in Thailand, you present your dog's documents at the Animal Quarantine Station. Officers verify the import permit, vaccination records, health certificate, and microchip. Once satisfied, they issue a Notice of Import Approval (Form R-6) and an Import License (Form R-7).

Airports in Thailand

Pets can arrive at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (Bangkok), Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), Phuket International Airport (HKT) .Each airport has its own AQS office. We submit your import permit application to the correct station based on your destination.

Banned breeds

Thailand does not publish an official banned breeds list. However, Pit Bull Terrier breeds and American Staffordshire Terriers may face additional requirements, including mandatory spaying or neutering. Some airlines also restrict certain breeds. We'll advise on any breed-specific considerations when you request a quote.

Dog flights to Thailand: safe, direct, and carefully planned

Every dog's flight is arranged with their safety and comfort as the priority. We select airlines with proven animal handling records and plan routes that minimise travel time and stress. For dogs flying from the UK to Thailand, Thai and British Airways offer a direct cargo service from London Heathrow to Bangkok, keeping the journey to around 11 to 12 hours.

If a direct route isn't suitable for your dog's breed or schedule, we arrange flights via Dubai, Doha, or Amsterdam with trusted carriers including Emirates, Qatar Airways, and KLM.

At every transit point, your dog is offloaded, checked, and cared for at the airline's dedicated animal reception centre. We book cargo space, confirm crate specifications with the airline, and ensure your dog's paperwork matches the flight schedule precisely.

Feline panleukopenia vaccination

In addition to rabies, Thailand requires cats to be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia (also known as feline parvovirus). This must be given at least 21 days before departure. We also strongly recommend FVRCP vaccination (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) for broader protection, especially if your cat will board with us before departure.

Parasite Treatments

No parasite treatments are required for dogs travelling to Thailand, however we always recommend keeping External (Ticks and Fleas) and Internal (Tapeworms) Treatments up to date at all times.

Import permit application

We apply for your cat's import permit from Thailand's Department of Livestock Development at least 7 working days before travel. Export health certificate

Within 3 days of departure, an Official Veterinarian appointed by DEFRA completes your cat's export health certificate (EHC 2917). This certifies your cat is healthy and meets all Thai import conditions. We arrange this appointment and ensure the import permit number is correctly recorded.

Arrival and clearance at the AQS

On arrival, you present your cat's documents at the Animal Quarantine Station. Officers check the import permit, vaccination records, health certificate, and microchip. Once verified, they issue the import license and your cat is released. The fee is 500 Thai Baht per animal.

Travel crate specifications

Most domestic cats are permitted entry to Thailand. However, certain hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry may face restrictions. Savannah cats and Bengal cats must be at least five generations removed from their wild ancestor to be eligible. If your cat has serval, Geoffroy's cat, or jungle cat ancestry, contact us to verify eligibility before starting the process.

Cat flights to Thailand: calm journeys, carefully routed

We plan every cat's flight to keep stress to a minimum and travel time as short as possible. For cats flying from the UK to Thailand, Thai Airways provides a direct cargo service from London Heathrow to Bangkok, meaning your cat spends around 11 to 12 hours in transit. If a direct flight isn't available on your preferred date, we arrange routes through Dubai, Doha, or Amsterdam with Emirates, Qatar Airways, or KLM.

Your cat's crate is fitted with absorbent bedding and a secure water container, and at every transit point, airline staff check on your cat at their dedicated animal reception centre. We confirm cargo space, coordinate crate specifications with the airline, and align your cat's flight schedule with their documentation timeline.

Cat relocation to Thailand FAQs
How long do cats have to quarantine in Thailand?

There is no mandatory quarantine for cats arriving with complete documentation. Your cat is inspected at the Animal Quarantine Station and, provided everything is correct, released the same day.

How much does it cost to fly a cat to Thailand?

Costs typically start from around £1,400. The final price depends on your cat's size, the crate needed, departure airport, and additional services. Complete our quote form for a detailed estimate.

What vaccinations does my cat need for Thailand?

Your cat must be vaccinated against rabies and feline panleukopenia at least 21 days before departure. We recommend the broader FVRCP vaccine for additional protection.

Do cats need blood tests for Thailand?

Thailand does not currently require a rabies antibody blood test (RNATT) for cats arriving from the UK, as the UK is classified as a rabies-controlled country. This simplifies the timeline compared to destinations like Australia.

What size crate does my cat need?

Your cat must be able to stand without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We provide IATA-compliant crates built to your cat's measurements.

Are snub-nosed cats allowed?

Yes. Brachycephalic cat breeds like Persians and Exotic Shorthairs can travel to Thailand. Some airlines restrict these breeds during warmer months, so we time travel carefully and select airlines experienced in transporting snub-nosed pets.

What happens if my cat is pregnant?

Thailand permits the import of cats provided they are healthy and meet all other requirements. However, airlines will not accept pregnant pets for travel. If your cat is pregnant, contact us to discuss timing.

Can I take my cat to Phuket or Chiang Mai directly?

Yes. Thailand has Animal Quarantine Stations at Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok), Chiang Mai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Koh Samui International Airport. We submit your import permit to the correct station based on your final destination.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted entry to Thailand. However, certain hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry may face restrictions. Savannah cats and Bengal cats must be at least five generations removed from their wild ancestor to be eligible. If your cat has serval, Geoffroy's cat, or jungle cat ancestry, contact us to verify eligibility before starting the process.

Can I fly my cat on the same flight as me?

We can arrange for your cat to travel as cargo on the same flight you're booked on, so you arrive in Thailand together. Availability depends on the airline's cargo schedule and your cat meeting all import requirements on your chosen date.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
