Pet Shipping to New Zealand made simple

Taking your pet to New Zealand requires careful planning, but the process is manageable when you have the right support. New Zealand is a rabies-free country with rigorous import requirements designed to protect its unique environment and wildlife.

Every cat and dog entering New Zealand must complete several key steps. Your pet needs a rabies vaccination followed by a rabies blood test (RNATT) to confirm adequate antibody levels. Once results are confirmed and endorsed through an Official Vet Declaration, we apply for your pet import permit from the Ministry for Primary Industries. The permit application takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks to process.

With planning starting 4 to 7 months before departure, we'll guide you through every stage and ensure your pet arrives safely at their MPI approved quarantine facility.

Pet flights to New Zealand: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
The timeline depends on your pet's current rabies status. If your pet already has a valid rabies vaccination, the timeline is closer to 4 months. For unvaccinated pets, allow around 7 months to accommodate the vaccination schedule and mandatory waiting periods.
How much does it cost to move a pet to New Zealand?
Flight costs are based on the size of your pet's travel crate, which is built to their measurements. Additional costs include import permits, blood tests, quarantine fees, and parasite treatments. Complete our quote form for a personalised, itemised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to New Zealand?
We primarily use Qatar Airways (via Doha) and Emirates (via Dubai), both offering dedicated pet reception centres at their transit hubs. Flights depart from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. We handle all transit permit requirements at stopover points so your pet's onward journey runs smoothly.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. All pets travel in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold, just like the passenger cabin. Our IATA-compliant shipping crates include absorbent bedding and secure food and water containers.
Where can my pet fly into in New Zealand?
We can transport pets to Auckland (AKL) or Christchurch (CHC). All flights from the UK include a transit stop in Dubai, Doha, or Singapore, where your pet will rest at a dedicated pet reception centre before continuing their onward journey.
What is an RNATT and why is it required?
A Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) is a rabies blood test that confirms your pet's vaccine has produced sufficient antibodies. The date this blood sample reaches an approved laboratory starts the mandatory 3-month waiting period before travel. An Official Vet Declaration (OVD) must then endorse the result before the permit application can proceed.
What are the quarantine requirements?
All pets entering New Zealand must complete 10 days at an MPI approved quarantine facility. We book your pet's quarantine space in advance and can arrange onward transport to your final destination after release.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to New Zealand?
Yes. With proper preparation and careful timing, we can transport brachycephalic breeds safely. Only around 5% of snub-nosed pets suffer from BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airways Syndrome), and with the right airline selection and seasonal planning, most travel without issue.
Can I take my assistance dog to New Zealand?
Yes. Assistance dogs can travel to New Zealand provided they meet all the same import requirements as other dogs, including vaccinations, blood tests, and quarantine. We'll coordinate the process to keep disruption to a minimum.
Are there any banned breeds?
New Zealand prohibits the import of American Pit Bull Terrier, Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, and Perro de Presa Canario. Hybrids (offspring of dogs or cats crossed with another species) are also restricted.

Dog shipping to New Zealand: essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations or blood tests. This microchip number links all documentation and ensures your dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination and RNATT

Your dog must have a valid rabies vaccination, administered or boosted within the previous 12 months. The rabies titre test (RNATT) can be taken at least 21 days after vaccination. The date the sample reaches an approved lab starts the mandatory 3-month waiting period before your dog can travel to New Zealand.

Official Vet Declaration (OVD)

Once the RNATT result is confirmed, an unconnected official veterinarian must verify and endorse the result. This statutory declaration is a required accompanying document for the import permit application.

Additional blood tests for dogs

Starting around 40 days before departure, your dog will require blood tests for:

  • Leptospirosis
  • Heartworm
  • Brucella Canis
  • Brucella Gibsoni
  • Babesia Gibsoni
Parasite treatments

Dogs must receive two rounds of internal and external parasite treatments within 30 days of departure, with at least 14 days between each dose. The second dose can be administered at the same time as the export health certificate appointment.

Vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, your dog must have valid vaccinations for:

  • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Kennel Cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica) or canine influenza — may be required depending on the quarantine facility booked

All vaccinations must be current and administered or boosted within the 12 months before travel.

Import permit application

After the RNATT result is endorsed via the Official Vet Declaration, we complete the permit application form and submit it to New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries. Approval typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. It's important to note that the permit office is closed during November and December, so applications submitted after this time won't be processed until February.

Export health certificate

The export health certificate must be completed within 2 days of departure by an official veterinarian. The final part is completed at the airport during check in, where your dog's travel crate is sealed before the flight. Our airport vet team can complete the final export papers at check in for your convenience.

Quarantine in New Zealand

All dogs entering New Zealand must complete 10 days at an MPI approved quarantine facility in Auckland or Christchurch. The facilities provide secure housing, daily care, and veterinary oversight. After completion, we can arrange onward transport to your final destination via our trusted network of IPATA registered agents.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated cargo hold. We select airlines with excellent animal handling records, primarily Qatar Airways and Emirates. Both offer climate-controlled reception centres at their transit hubs where dogs are fed, watered, and exercised during layovers.

Banned dog breeds

New Zealand prohibits the import of:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Brazilian Fila
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Perro de Presa Canario

Hybrids (offspring of dogs crossed with another species) are also restricted. Unfortunately, we cannot transport these breeds to New Zealand due to government restrictions.

Microchip requirements

Like dogs, all cats must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip before any vaccinations or blood tests. This ensures your cat or dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination and RNATT

Your cat must have a valid rabies vaccination, administered or boosted within the previous 12 months. The rabies blood test (RNATT) can be taken at least 21 days after vaccination. When this blood sample reaches an approved lab, the mandatory 3-month waiting period begins.

Official Vet Declaration (OVD)

Once the RNATT result is confirmed, an unconnected official veterinarian endorses the result. This declaration accompanies the import permit application.

Blood tests

Your cat only requires one blood test - the RNATT - to confirm their rabies vaccination has produced sufficient antibodies. We coordinate the timing with your vet to ensure the result is processed correctly and your 3-month waiting period begins without delay.

Parasite treatments

Cats must receive two rounds of internal and external parasite treatments within 30 days of departure, with at least 14 days between each dose. The second treatment can be administered at the same time as the export health certificate appointment.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted, but certain hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry may face restrictions. Bengal cats (domestic cat crossed with Asian leopard cat) are generally acceptable. If your cat has Safari cat, Serval, or Jungle cat ancestry, contact us to check eligibility before beginning the process.

Vaccinations

The rabies vaccine is mandatory. Your cat must also have a valid vaccination for:

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

This must be current and administered or boosted within the 12 months before travel.

Import permit and export paperwork

After the RNATT result is endorsed via the OVD, we submit the permit application to New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries. Approval takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Bear in mind the permit office is closed during November and December, with applications not processed until February.

Export health certificate

Within 2 days of departure, an official veterinarian certifies your cat meets all entry requirements. The final part of the veterinary certificate is completed at the airport during check in before the travel crate is sealed.

Quarantine arrangements

All cats must complete 10 days at an MPI approved quarantine facility in Auckland or Christchurch. We book quarantine space in advance and provide a booking confirmation letter with full details of the facility. After release, we can arrange onward transport to your final destination.

Flight arrangements

Cats travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We ensure your cat's crate is appropriately sized, fitted with absorbent bedding, and includes secure water containers. At transit stops in Doha, Dubai, or Singapore, your cat will be cared for at the airline's reception facility.

Cat flights to New Zealand: your questions answered
How long does the cat relocation process take?

If your cat has a valid rabies vaccination, allow around 4 months. For unvaccinated cats, the process takes approximately 7 months. Cats benefit from simpler blood test requirements, but the timeline is driven by the same mandatory waiting periods.

How much does it cost to fly a cat to New Zealand?

Costs depend on your cat's size, the crate needed, quarantine fees, and additional services. Complete our quote form for a detailed, personalised estimate.

What vaccinations does my cat need?

Your cat must have a rabies vaccination to begin the export process. FVRCP vaccination must also be current and administered within the 12 months before travel.

Do cats need blood tests for New Zealand?

Yes, but only the RNATT blood test is required. Unlike dogs, cats don't need additional tests for Brucella Canis, Heartworm, or Leptospirosis.

How long does my cat need to wait after the RNATT?

Your cat must wait 3 months (90 days) from the date their blood sample reaches the approved lab. This waiting period cannot be shortened.

What size crate does my cat need?

Your cat must be able to stand without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We provide IATA-compliant crates built to your cat's measurements.

Can I fly my cat on the same flight as me?

We can try to book cargo space on your flight if you provide your airline and travel date. Availability depends on the airline's cargo schedule and your cat meeting all import requirements on your chosen date.

What happens if my cat is pregnant?

New Zealand permits the import of pregnant cats provided all other requirements are met. However, females with suckling young cannot travel until the kittens are weaned.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
