Pet shipping to Europe made simple

Travelling to Europe with your pet involves specific documentation requirements that have changed since Great Britain left the European Union. EU pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel to EU countries. Most pets now travel on an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), completed by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of departure, covering a single journey and permitting free movement around EU countries for four months.

The good news is that no quarantine is required, and no blood tests are needed for cats or dogs travelling to Europe. Your pet simply needs a valid rabies vaccination, a 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip, and the correct travel documentation for their specific journey type.

With flights departing from airports across the UK and journey times of just one to five hours, Europe is one of the most accessible destinations for pet travel. We'll advise on the right documentation, select the best airline for your pet, and manage every step from first enquiry to safe arrival.

Pet flights to Europe: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
If your pet already has a valid rabies vaccination, we can arrange travel within a few days. If your pet hasn't been vaccinated, you'll need to allow at least 21 days after their primary vaccination before they can travel. We recommend getting in touch as soon as you have a travel date in mind.
What documentation does my pet need for Europe?
Most pets travelling from Great Britain require an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), completed by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of departure. This is valid for a single journey and permits onward travel around Europe for six months. If your pet has a pet passport issued in an EU country, this may still be valid. For commercial journeys, sporting events, or where the owner is not travelling within five days of their pet, an EU Export Health Certificate (EHC) is required instead. We'll advise on the correct document for your circumstances.
What is an Animal Health Certificate and do I need one?
An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is the standard travel document for pets moving from Great Britain to EU countries for non-commercial purposes. It replaces the EU pet passport for GB-issued documents and must be completed by an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before your pet departs the UK.
Can I still use an EU pet passport?
EU pet passports issued in an EU member state are still valid for travel between EU countries and for entry from Great Britain,  provided your main residence is in Europe, as in April 2026 this loophole was closed.  If your passport was issued in Great Britain, it is no longer accepted. We'll confirm which documents apply to your pet's specific situation.
Do pets need to quarantine when travelling to Europe?
No quarantine is required when travelling from the UK to Europe. Provided your pet's documentation and vaccinations are in order, they can travel directly to your destination.
Do dogs and cats need blood tests for Europe?
No. Unlike some long-haul destinations, there are no blood tests required for cats or dogs travelling to Europe from the UK. A valid rabies vaccination and correct microchip are the key requirements.
What vaccinations will my pet need?
All pets must have a valid rabies vaccination. If it's their first (primary) vaccination, it must be administered at least 21 days before travel. Pets with an up-to-date booster vaccination can travel sooner. All pets boarding with us before departure will also need their annual vaccinations. For dogs, this includes DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough). For cats, we recommend FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia).
Which airlines fly pets to Europe?
We work with British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, and TAP, all of which offer direct routes to over 100 destinations across Europe. Departures are available from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. We'll select the best airline and route for your pet based on their size, breed, and destination.
How much does it cost to move a pet to Europe?
Costs are based on the size of your pet's travel crate, which is determined by your pet's measurements. Additional costs include travel documentation and any arrival fees. Europe is one of the more competitively priced destinations due to the number of airlines operating across routes. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Are snub-nosed pets allowed to travel to Europe?
Yes, in most cases. With the right preparation, we can transport brachycephalic breeds. Travel may be restricted to certain times of year when temperatures at transit points are lower. We'll advise on the best timing and airline for your pet's specific breed.
Are there any banned breeds?
The following breeds cannot be imported into most European countries due to government restrictions:
  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileira
  • Perro de Presa Canario
Unfortunately, we're unable to transport these breeds to Europe.
Do assistance dogs follow the same rules for Europe?
Yes, assistance dogs travelling to Europe follow the same documentation and vaccination requirements as other dogs. Some airlines and routes have specific provisions for assistance dogs, so contact us and we'll advise on the best arrangements.
What are the rules for pets travelling through Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland follows different rules to Great Britain. Pets travelling from Northern Ireland to EU countries may be able to use a pet passport issued there, as Northern Ireland is treated differently under post-Brexit arrangements. Contact us and we'll confirm the correct process for your starting point.

If your dog is travelling for commercial purposes, or if the owner is not travelling within five days of the dog, an EHC is required instead. Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
