Pet shipping to Saudi Arabia made simple

Moving a pet to Saudi Arabia is straightforward when you understand what's needed and start planning in good time. Saudi Arabia requires all imported pets to meet strict health and documentation standards, designed to protect both animals and the country's biosecurity.

Every dog and cat entering Saudi Arabia must have a valid microchip, an up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a veterinary health certificate completed by an Official Veterinarian. This certificate must be endorsed by the UK's Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). An import permit from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) is also required and must be secured before your pet departs the UK.

Certain dog breeds are prohibited from entry entirely, including Rottweilers, Mastiffs, and Boxers. We'll confirm your dog's eligibility at the outset so there are no surprises.

Planning should start at least 2-3 months before departure to allow time for the rabies vaccination window and permit processing.

Whether you're moving with one pet, two pets, or more we'll guide you through every stage and ensure a smooth journey from the UK to your new home.

Dog shipping to Saudi Arabia: essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip before any vaccinations or health checks take place. This microchip number links all documentation and ensures your dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination

A valid rabies vaccination is mandatory for all dogs entering Saudi Arabia. It must be administered by a licensed veterinarian at least 30 days before travel and no more than 6 months before entry. Three-year vaccines are not recognised. We'll advise on the correct timing when we begin planning your dog's journey.

Veterinary health certificate

A veterinary health certificate must be completed by an Official Veterinarian within 96 hours of shipment. It confirms your dog is healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, and free from signs of disease. The certificate must state your dog's classification as a guard dog, hunting dog, or seeing-eye dog. Without this classification your dog will be refused entry. The certificate must then be endorsed by APHA and legalised by the Saudi Embassy before your dog travels.

Import permit from MEWA

An import permit from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) must be obtained before your dog departs the UK. We handle the application and track approval on your behalf.

Additional vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, we strongly recommend protecting your dog against:

  • Distemper (included in the DHPP combination vaccine)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)

These vaccinations are required if your dog boards with us before departure.

Breed restrictions

Saudi Arabia prohibits the import of the following breeds:

  • Rottweiler
  • Pit Bull
  • Boxer
  • Mastiff
  • Tosa
  • Perro de Presa Canario
  • Japanese Akita
  • Staffordshire Terrier
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Hovawart
  • Great Dane
  • Leonberger

Dogs that resemble banned breeds may also be refused at customs. We'll confirm your dog's eligibility before any bookings are made.

Hunting dogs

Hunting dogs such as Salukis and Greyhounds may be subject to a different classification under Saudi import rules. We'll advise based on your dog's breed and purpose of travel.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We select airlines with strong animal handling records and supply correctly sized IATA-compliant crates. Your dog will have absorbent bedding, water access, and secure ventilation throughout the journey.

Dog flights to Saudi Arabia: safe, direct, and carefully planned

Every dog's flight is arranged with their safety and comfort as the priority. We select airlines with proven animal handling records and plan routes that minimise travel time and stress.

For dogs flying from the UK to Saudi Arabia, British Airways and Saudia Airlines offer direct services from London Heathrow to Riyadh (RUH) and Jeddah (JED).

If a direct route isn't suitable for your dog's breed or schedule, we arrange flights via Europe, with a longer travel duration, via either Europe (KLM, Lufthansa) or other middle Eastern Carriers (Emirates, Qatar Airlines).

At every transit point, your dog is offloaded, checked, and cared for at the airline's dedicated animal reception centre. We book cargo space, confirm crate specifications with the airline, and ensure your dog's paperwork matches the flight schedule precisely.

Whether you're making a permanent move or joining family on the island, dog relocation to Saudi Arabia follows a clear, well-established process.

Flight time is approximately 6 to 7 hours direct, or longer via a connecting hub depending on your routing. We'll recommend the best option for your dog's breed, size, and travel date.

A MEWA import permit must be in place before your cat departs the UK. We manage the application via the Naama platform, track progress, and ensure the permit is ready well ahead of your travel date.

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

This vaccination is required if your cat boards with us before departure.

Blood tests

Unlike destinations such as Australia or New Zealand, Saudi Arabia does not currently require a rabies antibody blood test (RNATT). This simplifies and shortens the preparation process considerably.

Cats travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We size the crate to your cat's measurements, include absorbent bedding, and fit secure water containers. Your cat's comfort and safety throughout the journey is our priority.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cat breeds are permitted into Saudi Arabia. Bengal cats are only allowed if they are 5th generation or more removed from their wild Asian leopard cat ancestry. If your cat has any wild cat lineage, contact us before making any travel plans so we can confirm eligibility.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
