Pet shipping to the USA made simple

Pet travel to the USA from the UK is one of the most popular routes for pets leaving the UK. Every year, thousands of families relocate to America, and making sure their pet travels safely is one of the biggest concerns. There is no quarantine required, no mandatory blood tests or Rabies titre tests, and no lengthy waiting periods, but there are still important steps that need to be completed correctly.

Every dog and cat entering the USA needs a valid rabies vaccination and an Fit-to- Fly issued by an official veterinarian. Dogs also require a CDC importation form, which takes around five minutes to complete online and is approved immediately. Your pet must have an ISO compliant microchip, and a veterinary examination confirming they are fit to travel must take place within ten days of departure.

It's worth noting that a pet passport is not accepted for entry into the USA. Instead, your pet needs country-specific documentation including a health certificate issued by the vet. We handle all of this for you.

Whether you're moving with one pet, two pets, or more we'll guide you through every stage and ensure a smooth journey from the UK to your new home.

Pet flights to the USA: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
We recommend starting at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date to allow time for vaccinations, the veterinary examination, and flight bookings. However, because there are no blood tests or waiting periods for the USA, we can arrange travel in as little as a few days if your pet's rabies vaccination is already up to date. Early planning in advance always helps ensure the smoothest process.
How much does it cost to fly a pet from the UK to the USA?
Costs depend on your pet's size, the travel crate required, your departure airport, and your final destination. British Airways and American Airlines offer direct routes, while European carriers such as Lufthansa, TAP, and KLM provide more budget-friendly options with a transit stop through an EU country. Customs fees upon arrival are due at the owner's expense but can be included as an option in our quote. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to America?
We primarily use British Airways and American Airlines for direct transatlantic flights, covering around 25 US destinations from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. For more cost-effective options, we also work with Lufthansa, TAP, and KLM, which route through European hubs. American Airlines operates a hub system in the US, allowing onward connections to over 50 regional airports. Each airline has different restrictions on the live animals they carry, so we select the best option for your pet.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. All pets travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold, just like the passenger cabin. Pets cannot travel in cabin or as checked baggage on international flights to the USA. Our IATA-compliant air kennels include absorbent bedding and secure food and water containers. The hold is kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through their pet's flight.
Is quarantine required in the USA?
No. There is no quarantine requirement for pets entering the USA from the UK. Your pet can be with you as soon as they clear customs upon arrival.
What documentation does my pet need?
Your pet needs the following documents: a valid rabies vaccination certificate, an export health certificate (also known as a fly certificate or fit-to-fly certificate) issued by a veterinarian within 10 days of departure, and proof of an ISO compliant microchip. Dogs also require a CDC importation form, which is completed online and approved immediately. A pet passport is not valid for US entry. We ensure every vaccination document and health certificate issued meets the specific requirements of the USA.
Can I fly my pet to any city in the USA?
Yes. We can arrange direct flights to major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, and many more. Using American Airlines' domestic hub network, we can also connect your pet to smaller regional airports across the country. Your pet's entry port will depend on the airline and route selected. It is important to note that during the summer months, some airlines have heat restrictions in place, which can limit airline choices and route availability.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to the USA?
Yes. With the correct preparation, we can transport snub-nosed breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persians safely to America. This may need to be timed for cooler months depending on the route and schedule. We'll advise on the best airline for your pet.
Can I take my service dog to the USA?
Yes. Service dogs and service animals can travel to the USA, though they are subject to the same import requirements as pet dogs, including rabies vaccination and the CDC importation form. Additional documentation may be required by your airline. Contact us and we'll advise on the specific requirements for service animals.
What about other pet animals like birds or rabbits?
While the majority of our work involves dogs and cats, we can assist with the transportation of other pet animals. Please note that not all birds and exotic animals are permitted entry, and specific import requirements vary significantly. Contact us to discuss your individual circumstances.
Can I travel to Canada and the USA on the same trip with my pet?
If your plans include travel to both Canada and the USA, different entry requirements apply for each country. We can advise on the specific requirements and documentation needed and coordinate your pet's journey to cover both destinations.

Dog shipping to the USA: essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations. This fixed microchip and its unique microchip number link all documentation and ensure your dog is correctly identified throughout the journey. Your dog must be microchipped prior to the rabies vaccination for the vaccine to be considered valid.

Rabies vaccination

Your dog must have a valid rabies vaccination before travel. The good news is there is no mandatory waiting period after vaccination for dogs travelling to the USA, so your dog can fly shortly after receiving the rabies vaccine. Your vaccination document must clearly show the microchip number, date of vaccination, and vaccine product details.

Core vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, we strongly recommend ensuring your dog is up to date with core vaccinations including DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough). These vaccinations are required if your dog boards with us prior to departure.

CDC importation form

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires an importation form for all dogs entering the USA. This is a short online application that takes approximately five minutes and is approved immediately. The form confirms your dog meets the disease control requirements for entry. We'll guide you through the process to ensure it's completed correctly.

Parasite treatments

The USA does not require specific internal and external parasite treatments for dogs entering from the UK. However, we recommend ensuring your dog is up to date with routine parasite prevention for their own health and comfort during the journey.

Additional requirements by destination state

While federal entry requirements are consistent, individual US states may have specific import requirements for dogs. Some states require additional documentation or specific vaccinations beyond rabies. We'll check the rules and regulations for your destination state and ensure your dog meets all local pet policies before travel.

Export health certificate

There is no official DEFRA Export Health Certificate that needs to be completed when taking your dog to America. Instead, any registered vet can complete a "Fit-to-Fly" within 10 days of departure, confirming they appear fit, healthy, and ready to travel. The certificate must include your dog's microchip number, rabies vaccination details, and confirmation of a veterinary examination. Our airport vets can complete this at check-in for your convenience.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. Dogs cannot travel in cabin or as checked baggage on transatlantic flights. We primarily use British Airways and American Airlines for direct flights. For destinations not served directly, American Airlines' hub system allows your dog to connect through major cities such as Dallas, Charlotte, or Chicago to reach their final destination. We also have continental transits via Europe on KLM, Lufthansa, and TAP. We'll select the best airline and route based on your dog's breed, size, and travel schedule.

Travel crate specifications

Your dog must be able to stand up without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We build custom IATA-compliant air kennels based on your dog's measurements to ensure comfort whilst meeting airline requirements. We usually deliver the travel crate at least a month before departure so your dog can get used to it in advance.

Banned breeds

There are no banned dog breeds at the federal level when importing pet dogs into the United States. However, individual states and some cities may have specific restrictions on certain breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. We recommend checking local regulations at your final destination, and we'll advise you during the planning process.

Commercial imports

Please note that for commercial pet shipments, such as when a puppy is purchased in the UK and imported to the United States, the dog must be at least six months old. This rule applies to commercial imports only and does not affect personal import of your own pet dog.

How much does it cost to fly a dog from the UK to the USA?

The cost of flying a dog from the UK to the USA depends on their size, the air kennel required, your departure airport, and your chosen destination. Direct flights with British Airways or American Airlines are faster, while European carriers offer more budget-friendly options with a transit through an EU country. Additional costs such as customs fees are due at the owner's expense upon arrival. Complete our quote form for an accurate, personalised breakdown.

What size crate does my dog need?

Your dog must be able to stand without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We build custom IATA-compliant air kennels based on your dog's measurements to ensure comfort whilst meeting airline requirements.

Can I take my snub-nosed dog to America?

Yes. Snub-nosed breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and other brachycephalic dogs can travel to the USA with proper planning. We work with airlines that accept snub-nosed breeds and time travel to avoid hot weather at transit points. Only around 5% of snub-nosed pets are affected by BOAS, so with the right preparation, most breeds can travel safely and without issues.

How long is the flight from the UK to the USA?

Direct flights from the UK to the USA take approximately 6 to 10 hours depending on your destination. Flights via European hubs will add a few hours with a transit stop. During any layover, your dog will be cared for at the airline's animal reception facility.

Can my dog fly on the same flight as me?

We can try to book cargo space on the same flight if you provide your airline and travel date. Availability depends on the airline's cargo schedule and space on that particular service.

What documentation does my dog need?

Your dog requires the following documents: a valid rabies vaccination certificate, a CDC importation form (completed online and approved immediately), an export health certificate issued within 10 days of departure and endorsed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency, and proof of an ISO compliant microchip. We may also advise on additional documentation depending on your destination state.

Can I take my service dog to the USA?

Yes. Service dogs are subject to the same import requirements as pet dogs, including rabies vaccination and the CDC form. Your airline may require additional documentation for service animals. Contact us and we'll help coordinate.

Can I take two dogs to the USA at the same time?

Yes. We regularly transport two dogs or more on the same journey. Each dog requires their own travel crate, vaccination documents, and CDC form. We can coordinate so both dogs travel on the same flight wherever possible.

All cats must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip before any vaccinations. This ensures your cat is correctly identified throughout the import process, and the microchip number links to all travel documentation.

Rabies vaccination

Your cat must have a valid rabies vaccination before travel. As with dogs, there is no mandatory waiting period after vaccination for cats travelling to the USA, so your cat can fly shortly after receiving the rabies vaccine. Your vaccination document must clearly show the microchip number and date of vaccination.

Core vaccinations

The rabies vaccine is mandatory for travel. We also strongly recommend protecting your cat against FVRCP, which covers Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia. These core vaccinations are required if your cat will board with us prior to departure.

Export health certificate

Within 10 days of departure, your cat must be examined by an official veterinarian and issued a health certificate confirming they are fit to travel. This fly certificate must include microchip details, vaccination records, and confirmation of a veterinary examination. It is then endorsed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Our airport vets can complete this at check-in.

Parasite treatments

The USA does not require specific internal and external parasite treatments for cats entering from the UK as the exporting country. However, we recommend keeping your cat's routine external parasite treatments up to date for their comfort during the journey.

Additional requirements by destination state

Some US states have specific entry requirements for cats beyond the federal baseline. We'll check the regulations for your destination state and ensure your cat meets all local requirements before departure.

Flight arrangements

Cats travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. Cats cannot travel in cabin on international flights to the USA. We ensure your cat's air kennel is appropriately sized, fitted with absorbent bedding, and includes secure water containers. The hold is kept dark, which helps cats settle during the flight.

Travel crate specifications

Your cat must be able to stand without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We provide IATA-compliant air kennels built to your cat's measurements for a comfortable and safe journey. We recommend getting your cat used to the travel crate well in advance of departure.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted entry to the USA. Bengal cats and other hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry are generally accepted, though regulations can vary by destination state. If your cat has unusual ancestry, contact us and we'll verify eligibility before you travel.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
