Pet Shipping to Hong Kong made simple

Taking your pet to Hong Kong requires the right vaccinations, an import permit, and a completed export health certificate. The good news is that Hong Kong does not require blood tests or quarantine for cats and dogs arriving from the United Kingdom, making it one of the more straightforward destinations for pet travel from the UK.

Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) classifies countries into groups based on their rabies status and the risk of contagious diseases. The United Kingdom falls into Group I, which means pets entering Hong Kong from the UK face the simplest set of requirements. Countries in Group II, Group IIIA, and Group IIIB have progressively stricter conditions, including additional blood tests and longer waiting periods. As a Group I country, the UK benefits from no mandatory rabies blood test, no quarantine, and an export timeline that can be as short as two weeks.

The process begins with ensuring your pet has the correct vaccinations at least 14 days before departure. Your dog or cat must also be at least five months of age at the time of travel. The import permit, known as a special permit or special waiver, is then applied for through the AFCD. Once approved, we complete your pet's export health certificate with an official veterinarian and arrange their flight.

Whether you're moving with one pet, two pets, or more we'll guide you through every stage and ensure a smooth journey from the UK to your new home.

Pet Flights to Hong Kong: what you need to know

Planning
Flights & Airlines
Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
We recommend starting 4–8 weeks before your intended travel date. Whilst a correctly vaccinated pet can be ready in as little as two weeks, allowing extra time gives us flexibility with permit applications and flight availability.
How much does it cost to move a pet to Hong Kong?
Costs depend on your pet's size, the travel crate required, and your departure airport. Additional fees include the import permit and local customs clearance charges in Hong Kong. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to Hong Kong?
We primarily use British Airways and Cathay Pacific, both offering direct flights from the UK to Hong Kong. Departures are available from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Both airlines have excellent facilities for handling live animals at their departure and arrival terminals.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. All pets travel in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold that maintains the same conditions as the passenger cabin. Our IATA-compliant crates include absorbent bedding and secure food and water containers.
Does my pet need a pet passport for Hong Kong?
No. Hong Kong does not accept EU pet passports. Instead, your pet needs a DEFRA export health certificate and an import permit (special permit) issued by the AFCD. We handle all of this paperwork for you.
Is quarantine required in Hong Kong?
No. Provided all entry requirements are met, there is no quarantine for cats and dogs travelling from the United Kingdom to Hong Kong. The UK holds Group I status, which means pets entering Hong Kong from Britain face the fewest restrictions of any country group.
Does my pet need a rabies vaccination for Hong Kong?
Technically no, as the UK's rabies status is classified as rabies-free. However, we strongly recommend it. Pets arriving without a valid rabies vaccination will be vaccinated upon arrival, which adds time before you can be reunited. Completing this at least 14 days before departure ensures a faster release.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to Hong Kong?
Yes. At certain times of the year, when temperatures at transit points and arrival are below 28 degrees, we can safely transport brachycephalic breeds to Hong Kong. We regularly fly snub-nosed dogs, including Bulldogs and Pugs, on this route.
What is the minimum age for pets travelling to Hong Kong?
Your dog or cat must be at least five months of age at the date of travel. Puppies and kittens younger than this cannot be issued an import permit. We'll confirm your pet's eligibility based on their date of birth when you request a quote.
Do you transport other animals to Hong Kong?
Yes. Whilst the majority of our work involves dogs and cats, we also have experience transporting birds, reptiles, and other animals to Hong Kong. Requirements vary by species, so contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Fast, quarantine-free arriva

Hong Kong does not require quarantine for dogs arriving from the UK. Once your dog clears customs at HKG airport, typically within around four hours, you'll be reunited and ready to settle in.
Dog Flights to Hong Kong: essential information
Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations begin. Hong Kong also recognises Avid microchips, but we recommend the ISO standard as it is accepted worldwide. This microchip number links all documentation and ensures your dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Vaccinations for dogs

Dogs must be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, canine parvovirus, and parainfluenza (DHPP) no later than 14 days before departure from the UK. These required vaccinations protect against contagious diseases that Hong Kong screens for at entry. We also strongly recommend a rabies vaccination. Without one, your dog will be vaccinated upon arrival in Hong Kong, which can delay reunion by several hours or more.

Minimum age for travel

Dogs must be at least five months of age at the date of departure. Puppies younger than this are not eligible for an import permit. We'll confirm your dog's eligibility based on their date of birth when you get in touch.

Import permit (special permit)

An import permit, also known as a special permit or special waiver, is required for all dogs entering Hong Kong. This is applied for through the AFCD (Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department) via our trusted local partner. The permit typically takes around 10 working days to be issued and can only be applied for once your dog has the correct vaccinations in place.

Export health certificate

Within 10 days of departure, an official veterinarian completes your dog's DEFRA export health certificate. This document confirms all of Hong Kong's entry requirements have been met. The original certificate must travel with your dog, attached to their crate.

Flight arrangements

Dogs travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We primarily book with British Airways and Cathay Pacific, both offering direct flights from the UK to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). Flight time is approximately 12–14 hours. For owners also relocating to nearby destinations like Singapore, we can advise on onward travel options.

Arrival and customs clearance

Once your dog lands at HKG airport, customs clearance typically takes around four hours. Provided all paperwork is in order, there is no quarantine. Your dog is released to you the same day.

Restricted and banned breeds

Hong Kong restricts the import of certain breeds classified as fighting dogs. These include the Pit Bull Terrier (including the American Pit Bull Terrier), Japanese Tosa, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (crosses of these breeds are also restricted). Owners of restricted breeds may need to meet additional conditions, including a statutory declaration confirming the breed. Please note that this list is maintained by the AFCD and may be updated. We'll advise on eligibility before you commit.

Blood tests

Good news for dog owners. There are no blood tests required for dogs travelling from the United Kingdom to Hong Kong. Because the UK is a Group I country, the AFCD does not require a rabies antibody test, unlike countries in Group II, Group IIIA, or Group IIIB.

Dog relocation to Hong Kong FAQs
Do dogs need to quarantine in Hong Kong?

No. Provided all vaccinations, documentation, and the import permit are in place, dogs arriving from the UK do not need to quarantine in Hong Kong.

How much does it cost to fly a dog to Hong Kong?

Costs depend on your dog's size, the crate required, your departure airport, and any additional services such as door-to-door collection. Complete our quote form for an accurate, personalised breakdown.

What size crate does my dog need?

Your dog must be able to stand up without their head touching the top, turn around easily, and lie down fully stretched. We build custom IATA-compliant crates based on your dog's measurements to ensure comfort whilst meeting airline requirements.

Can I take my snub-nosed dog to Hong Kong?

Yes. Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and other brachycephalic dogs can travel to Hong Kong when temperatures at all points on the route are below 28 degrees. We regularly transport snub-nosed breeds on this route and will advise on the best time of year to fly.

Can my dog fly on the same flight as me?

We can try to book cargo space on your flight if you provide your airline and travel date. However, availability depends on the airline's cargo schedule. Let us know your plans and we'll do our best to coordinate.

What documentation does my dog need?

Your dog requires a DEFRA export health certificate completed by an official veterinarian, an import permit (special permit) from the AFCD, proof of DHPP vaccination, and their microchip documentation. We handle all of this for you.

How long is the flight from the UK to Hong Kong?

Direct flights from the UK to Hong Kong take approximately 12–14 hours. Both British Airways and Cathay Pacific operate direct services, meaning your dog won't need to be transferred at a transit hub.

Cats have different stress responses to travel than dogs. We provide advice on crate training, understand airline restrictions on feline passengers, and ensure your cat's journey is as calm as possible.

Simple vaccination requirements

Cats travelling to Hong Kong need an FVRCP vaccination (covering Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia, also known as feline enteritis or cat flu) at least 14 days before departure.

This protects against feline respiratory disease complex, one of the contagious diseases Hong Kong screens for. We coordinate with your vet to ensure this is completed correctly.

Safe transport for all breeds

Whether you have a domestic shorthair, a Bengal cat, or a pedigree breed, we ensure compliance with Hong Kong's import regulations. We'll also advise on eligibility for hybrid breeds with wild cat ancestry.

Hong Kong also accepts Avid microchips, though we recommend the ISO standard for international compatibility. This ensures your cat is correctly identified throughout the import process and links all documentation together.

Cats must be vaccinated against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP) no later than 14 days before departure. These required vaccinations protect against feline respiratory disease complex (commonly known as cat flu) and feline infectious enteritis. We also strongly recommend a rabies vaccination. Without one, your cat will be vaccinated on arrival in Hong Kong, which can delay release.

Minimum age for travel

Cats must be at least five months of age at the date of departure. Kittens younger than this are not eligible for an import permit. We'll confirm eligibility based on your cat's date of birth.

Within 10 days of departure, an official veterinarian completes your cat's DEFRA export health certificate. This confirms all entry requirements are met. The original document must travel with your cat, attached to their crate, along with a copy of the import permit and vaccination records.

Blood tests

Good news for cat owners. There are no blood tests required for cats travelling from the United Kingdom to Hong Kong. As a Group I country, the UK is exempt from the rabies antibody testing required for countries in Group II, Group IIIA, and Group IIIB. This significantly simplifies the timeline compared to destinations like Australia or New Zealand.

Flight arrangements

Cats travel as manifest cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated cargo hold. We book with British Airways and Cathay Pacific, both offering direct flights from the UK to HKG airport. Your cat's crate is fitted with absorbent bedding and secure water containers for the 12–14 hour flight.

Arrival and customs clearance

Once your cat lands at Hong Kong International Airport, customs clearance typically takes around four hours. With all paperwork in order, there is no quarantine. Your cat is released to you the same day.

Hybrid and exotic cats

Most domestic cats are permitted entry to Hong Kong. Bengal cats (domestic cat crossed with Asian leopard cat) are generally accepted. If your cat has other wild cat ancestry, such as Safari cat or Serval lineage, contact us to verify eligibility before making plans.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
