Pet shipping to South Africa made simple

Importing pets into South Africa is entirely manageable with the right support. The country's regulations are designed to protect its animal population, and meeting them is straightforward when you know exactly what's needed. Requirements vary depending on both the origin country and destination country.

Dogs require a microchip, a rabies vaccination, an import permit (currently around 2 months to process), and seven blood tests completed within 30 days of departure. Cats follow a simpler path - a microchip, rabies vaccination, and import permit are all that's required, with no blood tests needed. For both dogs and cats, a DEFRA Export Health Certificate (EHC) must be signed off by an Official Veterinarian before departure.

With planning starting 3 to 4 months ahead depending on your pet (less time required for cat's), we'll guide you through every stage and ensure a smooth journey from the UK to your new home.

Safety & Welfare
Documentation
When should I start planning?
If you have a dog, start at least 3 months before your travel date. The import permit currently takes around 2 months to process, and blood tests must be completed within 30 days of departure. For cats, 1 month is usually sufficient, as permits are typically issued within 2 weeks.
How much does it cost to move a pet to South Africa?
Costs vary based on your pet's size, the crate required, and any additional services. All quotes are itemised and transparent. Complete our quote form for a personalised breakdown.
Which airlines fly pets to South Africa?
We primarily use British Airways for direct flights from London. We can also arrange transit options via Qatar Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa, with departures from airports across the UK including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
Which airports can my pet fly into?
We can transport pets directly into Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Durban International Airport(DUR) also accepts pets, though no direct flights operate from the UK - a transit via Dubai is required. Port Elizabeth (PLZ) does not currently accept direct pet imports from the UK, but onward travel van be arranged here and to other regional locations via a trusted local partner.
Will my pet need to quarantine?
No. There are no quarantine requirements for pets entering South Africa from the UK, provided all entry conditions are fully met. After customs clearance at the cargo terminal - which typically takes around 4 hours, your pet will be delivered to you by our trusted local partner.
Will my pet be safe during the flight?
Yes. All pets travel as manifested cargo in a pressurised, heated, and ventilated hold - conditions very similar to the passenger cabin. Our IATA-compliant crates are designed with your pet's safety in mind, with absorbent bedding and secure water containers to keep them comfortable throughout.
Can I take a snub-nosed pet to South Africa?
Yes. With the right preparation and careful seasonal timing, we can transport brachycephalic breeds safely. Only a small proportion of snub-nosed pets are affected by BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airways Syndrome), and we'll advise on the safest approach for your individual pet.
Are there any banned breeds?
South Africa prohibits the import of American Pit Bull Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers, Dogo Argentinos, and Japanese Tosas. We are unable to transport these breeds due to government restrictions.

Microchip requirements

All dogs must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before any vaccinations or blood tests are carried out. This microchip number links all documentation and ensures your dog is correctly identified throughout the import process.

Rabies vaccination

Your dog must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before travel. This is a mandatory entry requirement for South Africa as of Summer 2026 and must be recorded on all travel documentation.

Veterinary import permit

Once vaccinated, we apply for your dog's veterinary import permit from the South African authorities. The current processing time is approximately 2 months from the start of the application process. We strongly advise waiting for permit approval before arranging blood tests, as all seven tests must fall within the 30-day window before departure. We'll keep a copy of the original import permit on file and ensure it accompanies your dog's documentation throughout the journey.

Vaccinations

Beyond the mandatory rabies vaccination, we strongly recommend protecting your dog against:

  • Leptospirosis
  • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)

These vaccinations are required if your dog boards with us before departure. They are also required by South African domestic airlines should you need an onward internal flight after arrival.

Parasite treatments

Before travel, your dog must receive treatments for internal parasites (Heartworm) in line with South Africa's import conditions. We'll advise on the specific treatments required, ensure they are administered within the correct timeframes, and confirm they are recorded on the Export Health Certificate.

DEFRA Export Health Certificate

An Official Veterinarian must complete your dog's DEFRA Export Health Certificate within 10 days of departure. This certifies that your dog meets all of South Africa's entry requirements. Our airport vets or a local veterinary inspector can complete this at check-in for your convenience.

Blood tests for dogs

Within 30 days of departure, your dog must complete seven blood tests screening for the five diseases listed:

  • Brucella Canis (two types of test)
  • Trypanosoma Evansi
  • Babesia Gibsoni (two types of test)
  • Dirofilaria Immitis
  • Leishmania

We coordinate with your vet to ensure all tests are completed within the required window and results are fully documented.

Banned breeds

South Africa prohibits the import of:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Japanese Tosa

We are unable to transport these breeds due to government restrictions.

Pet export FAQ's

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding our international pet transport service.

If you have any more, please get in touch and we'll aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.
Where on the aircraft does my pet travel?

In general, all pets must travel as 'manifested cargo'.  This means that they travel in a compartment which is below the passenger cabin. This is kept pressurised, heated and ventilated, just like the passenger cabins. It is also kept dark, which encourages pets to sleep through the flight.

Will my pet be safe and comfortable?

All pets have to travel in containers which are compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations and with specific airline guidelines. These are all designed to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during their travel. They must always have enough space in their travel crate to stand up, lie down and turn around easily.

We can provide standard or custom-made air kennels which meet the IATA guidelines and include absorbent bedding and food and water pots. We ensure the container is secure and isn't too big (which can make your pet feel insecure), or too small. We usually like to deliver your container at least a month before your pet's flight so they can get used to it well before they travel.

How do you calculate the costs?

Airline shipping is calculated on the volume of the  travel crate. We advise constructing a bespoke IATA compliant wooden crate which is based of measurements of your pet - which can help minimise costs. Therefore, each quote is entirely unique and based on this volume and the route you are flying - for a full quote it is best to fill in our online quote form and we will get back to you within 24 hours with our estimate.

Can I use my own travel crate?

We will always try to use an existing travel crate, providing it is IATA compliant. To be certain that your own crate is suitable we would need to know what size it is, what it is made of (plastic or wood) the internal dimensions and some specific measurements from your pet.

What documents do I need?

Each country has different requirements when it comes to documents. Some require import permits to be applied for in advance - others don't. Almost all countries require some form of export documentation, whether an official DEFRA health certificate or an Animal Health Certificate, with entry criteria that must be met.  This could be blood tests or vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are a requirement for most countries. We can advise on each basis depending on where you are going too.

Can I fly out of my local airport?

Most flights will leave from the main international airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc).  Ultimately, the departure Airport will be determined by your destination as not all airlines serve all routes - but we will always try and base the quote on the closest airport that we can fly from, minimising overall flight times.

Can my pet fly on the same flight as me?

If you let us know which flight/airline you are planning to use and the date you plan to travel, we can make every effort to book cargo space on the same flight. This does depend on the airline having space and, for some flights, the time of arrival at transit points along the way. Additionally, in some countries animals are only permitted to arrive at certain airports.

Can I visit my pet during the flight?

Unfortunately no. Neither passengers nor crew have access to the cargo hold during flight.

Will my pet receive food and water?

Your pet will not be fed during the flight and we advise that you only give a light meal in the morning of travel if it's on a night flight. If your animal will be flying in the day, we advise it should be fed the night before. Your pet's air kennel will be fitted with a water container which will be filled before departure. We would also suggest that you exercise your pet as near to the flight time as possible.

What if I have to postpone my flight at the last minute?

We know that travel problems do arise. Maybe your own plans have changed, or your pet is unable to travel at the original time. Don't worry, as we can change the flight and get your pet back on track very quickly and, usually, only a small admin charge will be made to cover the amended paperwork and permits
